The BeST Clear System™ tank is about 30” in diameter and 40” tall. In most cases, there’s plenty of room for the tank alongside your pool filter equipment.
However, if your equipment area is too small and tight, the tank can be installed in an available space nearby.
The tank is a Low Density, UV-resistant durable Polyethylene that is food grade certified.
1. Backwashing your pool
Backwashing is the process to clean the swimming pool filter and should be done at least once a week to every two weeks. The normal filtering process moves water from the pool and sends it through the filter to remove dust, dirt, and debris before sending it back to the pool. This leaves a lot of debris and solids in your filter which needs to be backwashed in order to clean it.
Backwashing usually takes about two minutes and uses 80 – 100 gallons (300- 400 liters) of water. Usually, the wasted water generated from the backwashing process is discharged into the sewer system in accordance with Best Management Practices. It is illegal to pump this water to the street or storm drain water system and environmentally most unfriendly. It could potentially destroy our natural eco-system because of the chemicals, salts, and metals in the turbid water.
This is why it is very important to dispose of backwash water correctly. The “BeST system” makes it easy to comply – it recycles the cleared re-filtered water into your swimming pool.
2. Background
All across the world, including Australia & South Africa, water is becoming a scarce and vulnerable resource. The western U.S. is now encountering a MEGA drought, the worst in 1200 years recorded.
As more people flock to the cities every year, the demand for clean running water is getting bigger and bigger. The harsh effects of the drought are also felt. This forces water restrictions on all communities with no end in sight. In some countries, households are no longer permitted to top up their swimming pools with fresh water at all. The “Best Clear System” backwash ReUse unit will make it easier to maintain your pool water level and save water every month. It will save you money and it also protects the environment.

3. Description
The “BeST Clear SystemTM” backflush pool water ReUse is easy to use and eco-friendly. It stores and clears backwash water and recycles it back to your filter then returns to the swimming pool. The system can be installed near or far from your pool (wherever aesthetically pleasing). Just connect the backwash outlet pipe from the pool filter backwash valve to the “BeST Clear systemTM” inlet pipe and pump the water into the tank.
The water can be first chlorinated with an optional inline slow-release chlorinator, to clean it. This water is then left in the tank for 7 – 14 days or until the next cleaning cycle – but a min of 24 hours to allow the sediment and debris to settle to the bottom of the tank. When this process is finished, the water is recycled back into the pool. This assists in maintaining your pool water level without wasting precious drinking water. The system also has a by-pass function to bypass backwash water when needed. This is ideal when “wasting” the pool to get rid of severe sludge build-up (water not suitable for recycling) or with the first seconds of the backwash water
This system is installed as an add-on to your new or existing pool filtration system. It is designed to be installed by your local “BeST Clear SystemTM” dealer.
4. Component description (bill of material):
The “BeST Clear system™” for pool backwash recycling is available in a 95 gallon – 430-liter tank. It is made of Low Density, UV-resistant durable Polyethylene which is noncorrosive and rust-free. All fittings are included.
4.1 Inlet

4.2 Chlorinator
The optional Inline Chlorinator is installed inside the tank. When the backwash water flows through the unit, small amounts of the chlorine tablets dissolve in the water and flow into the “BeST Clear System™”.
The dosage of chlorine is manually controlled, which heightens or lowers the chlorine into the flow of incoming water. We recommend the maximum dosage to allow for the water to stand for 7- 14 days – but min 24 hours during the sedimentation process. Calcium hypochlorite or HYPO-CHLOR is mild calcium-based chlorine in a very stable dry tablet form.
Hypo-chlor has been specifically designed to dissolve slowly and consistently. It is dispensed from your inline chlorinator, is easy to use, and cost-effective.
When the chlorinator is empty, you just refill it. As a sanitizer, HYPO-CHLOR is much more versatile and effective than other chemicals or systems used for environmental sanitation.
It is approved for both drinking water and food contact surfaces, even at high concentrations, and is highly effective in controlling unwanted odors. It is much safer and less corrosive than chlorine gas and is more efficient and affordable than liquid chlorine bleach.
It is also not susceptible to bacterial resistance formation as is the case with organic disinfectants such as quaternary ammonium-based biocides.
IMPORTANT
*Always refill the chlorinator with the identical chlorine compound ingredient to avoid dangerous fumes or explosion. If you are not sure, wait til all the chlorine dissolves, then refill.
4.3 By-pass/waste valve
The system also has the ability to bypass the “BeST Clear System™” tank. If the water to be sent to waste is too contaminated with sludge to be stored, use the by-pass option to redirect the “wasted” water into the by-pass outlet and bypass the tank. The bypass Outlet should be directed to a sewer cleanout or large containment area.
4.4 The outlet valve on the
tank diverts the cleared backwash water through the filter into your swimming pool.The waste port (lowest opening) is used typically once a year to drain the tank of all the sediment and sludge. The waste outlet plug should only be used when you have a build-up of sludge at the bottom of the tank and are prepared to shop-vac the sludge out.
4.5. Installation Installing the tank
The tank needs to be placed on a solid base. No need for concrete (we do recommend a concrete or prefab pad), but it is very important that the base is leveled and solid in order to store 95 gallons/430 liters of water. (750-800 lbs or 340-360kg)
4.6 Installing the inlet supply
Connect your new or current pool backwash outlet to the “BeST Clear System™” 1.5” inlet pipe. Ensure that all fittings and pipes are PVC glued once all the pipe work is in place.
4.7 Installing the by-pass/waste outlet A 1.5” by-pass/waste outlet is provided.
This outlet needs to or should be connected to a backwash waste location, sewer cleanout or large contained landscape area. Ensure that no water will overflow or escape the area. Check all fittings and pipes are PVC glued once all the pipe work is in place. This is ideal.
PLEASE NOTE!
YOUR “BeST Clear System™” SHOULD ALWAYS BE HIGHER THAN YOUR SWIMMING POOL – then recycled water will flow back to your pool (recommended reuse enter @ skimmer) with gravity, unless you plumb the recycle line to the suction on the pump for future automation.
5. Maintenance – Draining the tank via waste port
The system is easy to clean and maintain. Once there is a build-up of sludge and debris in your tank, it is advisable to drain it through the waste port at the bottom. This should be done once a year or as the need arises. The water at the bottom of the tank contains all the settled sludge and debris. This contaminated water should be drained from time to time to ensure that the tank is clean and ready for the next backwash. *A shop vac will capture the sludge quickly and contain it for disposal.
